Rowena and barry

Known for her green fingers, Rowena loved her garden as much as her beagle, Barry, loved to dig it. Every time Barry dug a hole, Rowena would plant something new.

Here, there. Every-damn-where.

Her once emerald, symmetrical and luscious garden, of which she was very proud, now looked like a jazz inspired patchwork quilt of colour and utter madness.

Rowe lost Barry 3 years ago this spring, and whilst her trowel isn’t seeing as much use as it once did (and her knees are thankful for that) the blooming memorial left behind has kept her smiling each and every day.

    Dear Mr. B,

Aaaw. This is such a sweet story. I could just picture the two of them. We had a beagle when I was a kid. Ami. They can be a challenge. I still think of her.

    Shalom,

I, for one, would love a patchwork yard like this! Sweet story, Mr. Binks!

It does sound rather nice doesn’t it! Thanks for reading.

I think so 🙂 Of course, I am planning on xeriscaping my front yard and getting rid of the grass, so maybe I’m not impartial 😉

Aw, what a delightful tale :) We had a digger dog, but he was so loveable that we couldn’t be angry with him. Still miss him.

Rowena and Barry seem like they were made for each other.

Being a big fan of all types of gardens, your story brought a smile to my face. Rowe accepted Barry’s way and everyone benefited from it. Good story, Mr Binks.

Lovely, and yet sad. Great use of the prompt

      Thank you!

That ‘jazz inspired patchwork quilt’ of a lawn sounds just lovely. This story takes me back. We too had a beagle, who dug up every inch of our underground irrigation pipes. Our daughter also had one who followed her round one day as she was spreading chicken manure, and ate it all. Her belly swelled up so much we thought she’d burst. She survived. Thanks for this. Lovely story. You never forget them when they go. 😢

Sniff. I love this. So heartwarming. And as one whose backyard is a series of holes, I think I could learn something here…

      Thanks for the kind comment.

This was a touching story. I loved both the idea of a dog free to roam and dig, creating spots for new plantings, as well as your description of the garden Rowena and Barry left behind.

cute story! I’m a big fan of patchwork/cottage gardens 🙂

A lovely memorial to Barry, which was as much his creation as it was hers.

Oh my goodness! Our stories are quite alike. I promise I didn’t read yours before writing mine (haha). Great minds think alike!! 🙂

What a lovely story. And who needs a symmetrical garden. Smiles, memories and flowers, that’s the real thing.

Man’s best friend can provide both lots of fun and frustration in the same moment. I could picture them running around the garden digging and planting. Great tale.

    How sweet. Well done.

There’s some beautiful phrasing going on here, Mr. B.

I’ve heard that about dogs; they love to go digging around in the dirt!

    1. MrBinks

What a lovely comment, thank you.

    No better memorial.
