Toby and the bats

“There are bats up there,” pointed David. “Vampire bats.”

Toby shut him down almost immediately. “No there aren’t,” he said, his voice quivering.

Kimberly, 2 years above, caught the boys looking up at the tower.

“Toby’s right,” she said, “there aren’t any bats because they’ve all been frightened off by the ghosts. That’s the headteacher’s tower. The naughtiest kids went there, and were often forgotten about. Grown-ups have a habit of that. Ever heard the saying “out of sight, out of mind”? Well you don’t get much more out of sight than up there.”

“Bats,” muttered Toby. “It’s definitely bats.”
