The Shadow King

They called him the Shadow King, for he lurked among the darkness.

Some called him the Midnight Marauder, the Corridor Creeper, the Gloom Keeper, Shady the Immortal One, or Turok The Time Disruptor.

Others refused to put a name to the unknown.

There were plenty that didnโ€™t know he existed at all.

Dave, the nightshift coordinator, simply preferred โ€œDaveโ€. At a push he didnโ€™t mind โ€œMr Knightโ€ but always felt a bit weird hearing that.

Carrie switched off her desk lamp as she finished for the day.

โ€œNight Dave,โ€ she whispered, touching his shoulder gently as she passed his station.

    Very Mittyish

    1. MrBinks

      That’s a very nice compliment!

    Dear Mr. B,

I agree with Neil. Definitely reminiscent of one of my favorites, Walter Mitty. I love the way you used the music in your recording.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

Oh wow, 2 for the price of 1. Thanks both.

I really appreciate that you have a listen. I really enjoy that part of the process. I’m tempted to take them further, but I always find some excuse not to.

I could learn a lot from you. I mainly record mine at the request of a friend who is legally blind. I just record on my phone. Very crude.

Well, Mr. Binks, I’m sure I’ve discovered your secret identity. You’re James Thurber, aren’t you? Um … perhaps his son. Well, whatever …. I thought this was excellent and the audio was perfection. Well done, Mr. B!

    1. MrBinks

Ha! This is the 3rd comment about Walter Mitty. I must admit I’ve never read anything by James Thurber – the name is not well known in the UK. All I know of Walter Mitty is the Ben Stiller movie! ๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you for the lovely comments.

Ben Stiller, eh? Well, beats a blank, I guess, and I won’t hold that against you. However, try the original with the superb Danny Kaye; you won’t regret it.

        Most welcome!

  4. Sandra

The audio certainly complemented an already good story.

    1. MrBinks

      Thanks very much!

  5. Dale

Just coz someone is different, they end up with all sorts of names! Poor Dave, the night owl.

And now I’m feeling rather uncultured as I have not seen the movie nor read any of the books so I cannot compare this wonderful write to Walter Mitty!

MrBinks, your story made me think of the blind men and the elephant parable, but with a bit of tenderness thrown in for good measure. I enjoyed your story.

  7. Angela Adams

I especially enjoyed all the clever titles. Great voice. Fun, smooth read!

    1. MrBinks

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the audio.

  8. Keith’s Ramblings

An intriguing tale perfectly narrated. Nice one.

  9. GHLearner
