Vincent’s lunch

“What you got?”
 
Vincent popped open the lid of his lunchbox, moved aside the packet of Monster Munch and unwrapped his sandwich.
 
“Ham.” He said unenthusiastically.
 
He needn’t have waited for the theatrics of the reveal.
 
“You?”
 
“Same.” Replied Craig.
 
Later that night, Vincent’s father was in the kitchen preparing tomorrow’s lunch. To his right stood a shelf adorned with cookbooks from celebrity chefs from around the world. A TV in the corner of the room played Jamie Oliver’s latest cookery show-come-30-minute-book-advertisement.
 
Dad looked up from buttering the slices of soft white bread.
 
“Ham OK for tomorrow, mate?”
 
“Sure dad.”

    I guess Vincent doesn’t want to hurt his father’s feelings. I get the impression there’s more to this story than ham sandwiches.

    In Dad’s defence, he’s probably tried making other lunches and finds they always come back. No way I’m faffing about with butternut squash and truffle oil unless I’m 100% sure it’s going to be enjoyed more than the ham.

    Fun story! My boys took monster munch in their lunches today too (but not ham).

    MrBinks, happy you found my photo inspirational. I remember my grandma loved soft white Butternut bread with butter for her ham sandwiches. So funny they are surrounded by cookery but dad sticks with the old standard 🙂

    Obviously the cookbooks are mom’s, who is out of town at the mo, and dad has never opened a cookbook in his life. Looks like it’ll be ham until mom returns.

    Loved this story and all the comments and it seems you’ve struck on a familiar situation to many of us. My kids were always pretty fussy with school lunches and any meal for that matter. If something works and gets eaten, I fully understand “playing it again, Sam” (Line from Casablanca). I too have a plethora of cookbooks and am often short of ideas.

    BTW Any ideas for the collective noun for cook books?

    Cute story and I can identify with a guy who likes and reads cookbooks, watches cooking shows, and who (sort of) likes to cook, but never does. But it’s PB&J for me instead of ham.

    This is funny. And so true. Inspiration all around us – gardening ideas, home decorating, fashion, holidays …. but how often do we end up defaulting back to the tried and true? I do sense an undercurrent here, however, which is wonderful and adds an extra dimension to the story of these characters.
