Gladys and the driving rain

Tony stared out of the window as he did every morning from the comfort of the twin armchairs.

“Morning Gladys,” he said.

He reached over to his teacup, put it to his lips and blew gently before taking a sip.

“Ooh, still hot,” he said, as surprised today as he was yesterday and would be tomorrow.

“The roads are wet, Gladys. Must have been a downpour last night. Reminds me of that time we drove to Margate from Edinburgh. It rained all the way. Do you remember?”

He looked over at the empty chair.

“Good times,” he sighed.

“Good times.”

Take a listen to me reading today’s story

Thanks to Sandra Crook for today’s photograph and to Rochelle for hosting Friday Fictioneers. Personally I’ve got some reading to do, as I missed half of last week’s stories! Don’t be like me, go read all of this week’s entries here and check back later in the week (like I am going to do this week!) to see what’s been added.

Read more stories at this week’s live link.

Your story got me a little misty-eyed, MrBinks. Made me think of my mom after my stepdad passed.

I was wondering about the two chairs. I think this character has found a way to process his grief. The story is sad in one way, but also sweet. You balanced it nicely.

She never did listen to a word he said; so why start now?
