Joanna and Claire were inseparable.
Their mothers said they went together like duck and plum sauce.
The girls were full of imagination and invention. “Mud kitchen” was their favourite game, and for years they would look forward to the autumn and winter months far more than boring old, dry summer.
“Mud Pie with a side order of sticky leaves, ma’am,” Joanna would announce.
“Needs more slug trails,” Claire would reply.
Today, their restaurant “The Duck and the Plum” regularly features in the Michelin Guide, with Jay Rayner declaring the Mystery Meat Pie with sautéd stinging nettles “a crazy culinary triumph”.
