Lucy is a vegan

I remember that New Year’s Eve.

Colin and Beryl came over unexpectedly, not that they weren’t welcome, it was just… Miserable pair. There was enough food though. Only some little nibbles: bread sticks, ham, cheese, olives, you know.

I sent Phillip to grab some garden chairs. It wasn’t a problem, I just wish I’d known.

Beryl’s Lucy is vegan now. I don’t get that. Still, we had olives as I say, in case she dropped by as well. You never know with them. Joined at the hip those two. Haven’t seen her for a while, mind. Not since the accident.

I can’t decide if that ‘accident’ should feel sinister or not! Does someone object to vegans that much?!

  2. neilmacdon

That took a sinister turn at the end

    Dear Mr. B,

I could never be a vegan, Love my cheese too much and let’s not forget a good rare steak. 😉 You do leave the reader with many questions and a longing to know more.

    Shalom,

Accident had something to do with the choice of food?

Being vegan comes with its own challenges of food availability & liking

I was at a restaurant recently that was all about fresh local produce. When my vegan friend asked what her options were, they literally said “well, there’s olives”. I was furious.

Anyway, I love the voice you give here, so much said between these lines. But what accident? Readers demand more!!

Oh wow, that IS weird! (as well as frustrating).

Glad you found it interesting; thanks for reading.

I liked the conversational tone of the story and how we were in the MC’s thoughts, but the last line about the accident left me confused. Will there be a part two with the next photo?

  7. Sandra

I liked the chatty narrative style. It worked well. Shame about the accident though… I think someone might not be seeing next New Year but not sure who.

  8. Dale

Misery loves company. Why bother inviting yourselves if you will be such pains in the butt? Accident? Leave us hanging like that.

  9. granonine

Uhoh. That ending has a most sinister feel. Great story!

Not sure exactly what’s going on, but the vibes feel a bit sinister and draining.

Also, I didn’t see a link where we could hear you read it.

Just listened and understand better now, thanks for the link.

I love the monologue, which needs to go on for a further few paragraphs to clarify why Lucy is a vegan now and that accident??

  12. Keith’s Ramblings

Those last few words left me wondering what actually happened. Intriguing!

Btw, my daughter’s a vegan, just thought I’d mention it!

  13. The Sicilian Storyteller

This stream of consciousness is fabulous! Totally unexpected.

    I loved it!

I really enjoyed this – as a reading and the audio. Great ending. I shall feel uncomfortable for a while.
