Maria and the crack

Maria twitched. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been staring at the crack but it must have been a while. The coffee in her cup, previously too hot, was now perfectly drinkable.

She blinked rapidly and took a sip, her eyes fixated. It wasn’t pretty. It certainly wasn’t that interesting but here Maria stood. She could not look away. She was just, mesmerised.

A thud. A smack. The sound of gushing water.

The crack moved.

“Ah, sod it. Sorry to ask, Love,” it said, “but could you pass me my tool-bag. It’s just there, by your foot. Cheers Darling.”

  1. Charli Mills says:

You don’t even have to say it, and we know the nature of the tools and the profession cracked to this exposure in your flash. Well done!

  2. Norah says:

Ooh! I wasn’t sure what I was looking at, at first. But then I had to look again, just to be sure! Very funny!

  3. So funny. You had me thinking of a story my grandmother used to tell where she had been left to watch a snake on the fence post and it mesmerized her, slithering away unseen probably into some crack. You had me guessing through the piece and your ending came completely by surprise. Well done
